Welcome Reader,
If you have found this page late at night and you are reading it alone I feel its only fair to warn you that it will freak you out and when you finally get to sleep you’ll need to leave the light on.
So lets begin, this poltergeist curse occurred in California in 2006 and involved 4 witnesses living in the same house. Susan Lewis was very impressed with the house when she first moved in with her boyfriend Matt, her daughter Jamie and her step daughter Marie.
Everything was going great for the first few weeks, Susan and Matt’s relationship was happy and the two girls were enjoying the new house and fast becoming friends.
But all that was about to change, and some truly bizarre events were about to take place. The first one was quite noticeable to Susan, she had gone into the kitchen to get something and noticed a jar of opened peanut butter lying on it’s side on the worktop.
She assumed that one of the girls had thoughtlessly left it there, upon looking closer she noticed that the peanut butter itself wasn’t just spilled slightly but appeared to have been melted.
When asked about it, Susan’s daughter Jamie thought her mum was joking, or that someone had played a joke and didn’t give it much thought at all, however very soon the events inside the house would become impossible to put down to foolery.
The family began finding objects (jars - tinned food - shampoo bottles - ornaments) stacked in certain odd ways and in odd places, like leading up the stairs one by one or inside the microwave.
Jamie thought her step sister Marie was doing it the first few times and Susan suspected both the girls were playing pranks for some unknown reason. They began photographing the strange arrangements and annoying unexplained messes that were popping up.
On one particular day something happened that meant Susan and the 2 girls could no longer suspect each other or discount the strange phenomenon as mere pranks.
Both girls were in Jamie’s room going over some school studies, Jamie placed he coffee on a shelf near the bed and turned her back on it for a few seconds to let their dog into the room.
When she turned back her coffee had been thrown onto the centre of the bed-spread, and was soaking into the sheets in a large - messy squashed moth type pattern. Naturally she accused her step sister, who solidly denied it.
Feeling uncertain and creeped out Jamie became upset and a little afraid, she went to get some cleaning items for the bed and re entering the room placed a large bottle of bleach on top of the chest of drawers.
As before with the coffee, she turned her back on it for a few seconds to take the bedsheets off, when she turned back towards it the perched bleach bottle had been tipped on it’s side and was glugging out onto the carpet before her eyes.
Realising her sister wasn’t to blame and sensing something bizarre was happening Jamie understandably freaked out and shouted Susan into the house, who had been pottering in the garden.
Susan rushed inside thinking one of the girls had an accident or something and when she got to Jamie’s room Jamie began explaining what had happened in frightened panicky tones.
As she was explaining a small white horse ornament flew off the shelf behind her and landed right beside Susan! All three women froze … looking from each other to the ornament in stunned silence.
Alarmingly more objects began falling and flying off the shelves above the coffee stained bed, this was to much for the already frightened women and got out of the house pretty quick and locked themselves in the car, ”Mum - We’ve got a poltergeist in the house”.
Over the next few months things went from weird to just plain wrong, on many mornings the contents of the fridge would be all over the kitchen floor, with food messily stained on the fridge doors, cupboards, work surfaces and most creepily on the roof.
Inside the house doors would slam shut unexpectedly with no one standing near them, repeatedly! Both during the day and late at night. Also at night all the electric lights in the house would fail, sometimes independently but mostly all at once.
Susan, Jamie and Marie were convinced by this point that the house was haunted, probably by a malevolent poltergeist. However Susan’s boyfriend Matt remained extremely skeptical and suspected that Jamie was behind all these happenings and doing so to get attention.
I’m not sure how he reasoned she was slamming doors without touching them, but it wasn’t a reasonable situation to begin with and Matt had entered into a mind set of denial about this poltergeist curse.
One particular evening Susan found arrows drawn on the walls and the floor, most of these were pointing towards the central heating vents. Knowing that these vents lead to the attic Susan asked Matt to go up and have a look.
He was still very skeptical about the whole thing but Susan dug her heels in and convinced him to check it out, she was thinking there could be something up there they needed to see or throw out or something.
So Matt reluctantly climbed the attic ladder and got into the dark space, Susan climbed up behind him and used her flashlight to help him see, with her head and shoulders poking up through the trapdoor.
Susan remembers that the further Matt got into the dark attic, the more tense and oppressive the atmosphere became. Worried about potentially breaking his foot through the thin attic floor, and perhaps sensing the same weird vibe Susan was, Matt retreated back down the ladder, but because they never found anything concrete he remained dubious about the poltergeist claims.
In desperation Susan had sought spiritual advice and was told to “give” this entity something as a kind of peace offering. She cleared a small area on the living room table and in the centre placed a small cat ornament, Susan then said out loud “This gift is for you - to let you know that we mean you no harm - we don’t want you to be afraid of us - and we don’t want to be afraid of you”.
No sooner had she finished talking than in walked Matt, and when he found out what she was doing he wasn’t best pleased. He expressed his feeling that if there was something in the house the worst thing they could do was try and talk to or reason with it.
Of course with tensions running high and the difference of opinion on how to handle this odd problem, Matt and Susan began to verbally argue, which ended with Matt getting angry and snatching up the cat ornament.
He strode out onto the back porch and threw it as hard as he could far into the garden, turned back and re-entered the house, where he was very shocked to see the cat ornament sitting exactly where he had just picked it up from!
With his scepticism being pushed to breaking point Matt did the only thing his worried brain could think of, he smashed the cat statue. Susan, Jamie and Marie all felt this wasn’t going to help in the slightest and later that night they’re fears became true.
At about 11:30 that night Jamie had gone to the kitchen, when she opened the fridge the inner light revealed dark patches on the walls. She illuminated the kitchen by switching on the main light and revealed the word CAT written all every surface.
There were also foodstuffs all over the floor again, Jamie called Susan and Marie to show them the weird writings and the 3 women, no longer overly surprised, began to tidy up the flung about food.
As they were doing so they noticed something very very strange and quite unsettling, in some of the spilled tomatoe sauce on the floor there appeared to be a footprint, and not a human one.
Jamie photographed the footprint with her cell phone with her own foot beside it, it appeared to have 3 large toes instead of Jamie’s 5 toes but was otherwise roughly the same shape and size.
Susan later told interviewers “I saw those footprints down there - and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing - they were huge round toes - and a wide foot”.
Understandably it was all getting to much for the family but the final straw came one afternoon when Susan and Matt were out working and Jamie had gone out to get some replacement groceries, leaving Marie in the house alone.
She was in the lounge, lying on the sofa watching TV when the TV set began to randomly flip on and off rapidly. When she sat up and reached for the remote it slid away from her hand across the table and the lights in the room began flickering haphazardly then went of completely.
Becoming very afraid she got off the sofa and huddled down beside it, blindly following a deep survival instinct to make herself smaller, which unfortunately wasn’t going to help in this case.
She phoned Susan at work from her mobile and told her that “the furniture is moving across the room!”. Meanwhile outside the house Jamie had arrived home.
She was unaware that her step sister was in serious distress, but was having her own problems trying to get back inside. Every time she unlocked the door and went for the handle it would re-lock before she could open it.
Back in the house Marie was still hunkered down beside the sofa terrified by the ornaments flying of shelfs and the chairs rocking and sliding about. She grabbed her digital camera and began taking pictures just to light up the room with the flash.
At this point Jamie eventually managed to get into the house and the poltergeist ceased its attack. Later when the family looked at the pictures Marie had snapped in fright they were astounded to say the least. The pictures showed weird light patterns which appeared to be flying around the room!
Not long after this the family left the house and that weird and stressful part of their lives behind, Susan later learned that a number of her old neighbours from the street had also up-sticks and moved out. Leaving a few empty and unsold properties … well, almost empty.
